Mother’s Day is a brand’s social media big opportunity.

It’s time to start thinking about Mother’s Day. My Mom only wants a McDonald’s gift certificate. But I guess if that makes her happy that’s what I will give her. Her birthday comes shortly after so don’t look at me as if I’m being lame.

Although it was celebrated way back during Greek times, Mother’s Day didn’t become official till 1907. Today 82.8 million Moms in the U.S. alone will probably find themselves the recipient of some Mother’s Day tribute. Did you know one of the most popular gifts is perfume. What does that say? We need to smell better? Someone wants us to be sexier? (I just had to have a little bit of fun.)

This year it will prove to be a big social media campaign frenzy with brands hoping to reach her through a myriad of campaigns and help children make a tribute to their beloved Mother. So a bit of research and here are some of the one’s that have hit the web so far.

“The Pearl of Wisdom Mother’s Day”
Aren’t all Moms full of pearls of wisdom? In support of cervical cancer prevention, Moms can be honored with a personal tribute and receive a free Pearl of Wisdom pin along with a Mother’s Day card. The card contains information about cervical cancer prevention and a link so she and the whole family can see the tribute.

“Midlife Mother’s Day 2010 Campaign”
Right now we’re in a midlife baby boom. If you’re an older Mom, you can share your experiences of motherhood after 40. The Midlife Mother’s Day 2010 Campaign is looking for portrait stories of older mothers. Photos will be posted on Mother’s Day.

“Daughters of Beauty Campaign for Elizabeth Arden”
Elizabeth Arden is inviting moms and daughters to talk about beauty and aging. A winner will be chosen to receive a spa day. I’ve personally experienced an Elizabeth Arden spa day so this is pretty terrific. On the site you can see photos of Moms and Daughters and read their personal stories–“Who keeps you looking and feeling your youthful best?” You can also vote for the stories you think are best and sign up for the Beauty Revolution on Facebook.

“Power of the Purse”
Run out of 5 Denver chapter of Mother and More, The Power of a Purse Mother’s Day Campaign is to raise awareness of mother’s economic issues through the collection of new or slightly used purses. The purse is symbolic of a woman’s economic power having their own money to take care of herself and her children.

“America’s Favorite Mom”
Telefora is launching a Mother’s Day campaign with NBC and Hearst called “America’s Favorite Mom.” Simply upload videos, photos and essay testimonials and vote for your nominees. There will be fifteen finalists who will be celebrated on the “Today Show” with the ultimate cash and prize of an 18-carat gold “America’s Favorite Mom” pendant encrusted with diamonds.

“Getting Real about Motherhood”
Apple Bottom has a “Getting Real About Motherhood Contest” to celebrate mothers. Just nominate your Mom and she could win a $500 Gift Certificate from Wal-Mart plus gifts from Apple Bottoms by Nelly fragrance. Event the nominator gets a gift if their Mom wins.

“The Search For America’s Most Creative Mom”
For Moms who love crafting, Michael’s has a new Facebook fan page and they’re looking for you to enter Mom in “The Search For America’s Most Creative Mom” contest. Simply nominate Mom and share stories and photos of her creativity for a chance to win a $1,000 Michael’s gift card.

“What Makes Mom Special?”
“What Makes Mom Special?” That’s what Emeritus, an Assisted Living Company, wants to know. Their Mother’s Day contest launches on Facebook where you can tell stories and share pictures about Mom to win gift cards and flower arrangements.

“Give Mom an iPod with a personal message”
Although not a social media campaign, Beatweek is reports Apple is promoting the iPod touch as a 2010 Mother’s Day gift. A recent mailer from Apple asks you to “Give Mom an iPod with a personal message from you.” Apparently you can get your Mom and iPad pre-engraved with a personalized message.
